Football Season Review

№23: Coventry City

Coventry City endured a miserable 2011/12 league campaign, culminating in their inevitable relegation to League One. The Sky Blues have been in dire straits off the pitch for a number of years now and a lack of investment in the playing staff this term saw Andy Thorn and his side fall through the relegation trapdoor. Rookie boss, Thorn had his work cut out from the off, with a very youthful squad mixed with a sprinkling of experienced players. However, injuries to experienced first teamers such as centre back Richard Wood, playmaker Sammy Clingan and the January departure of top scorer Lukas Jutkiewicz to Middlesbrough left the Sky Blues well short of quality. The arrival of loan striker Alex Nimely added fresh impetus in the final third and a strong start to 2012 lifted hopes that Coventry could scrape out of the bottom three. Nevertheless, their lack of squad depth continued to leave them exposed even against the sides around them in the relegation dogfight. Defender, Richard Keogh was City's stand-out player for a second season running and it would not be a surprise to see the Irishman move on to continue playing Championship football elsewhere next term.
