Football Season Review

№8: Cardiff City

Cardiff endured an up-and-down season. After finishing 5th in 2019/20, the Bluebirds were tipped to repeat that feat or even go one step further and reach for the automatic promotion places. The reality was, Neil Harris' side never lived up to the lofty expectations set for them in pre-season and it took its toll. Harris eventually lost his job in January, with City sat in 15th place and the bleak prospect of potentially being dragged into a relegation battle. Cardiff reacted quickly and appointed veteran Mick McCarthy, which left many scratching their heads on how he would improve the squad with what many believed would be outdated tactics. The Irishman came in and saw his new side go 11 unbeaten in his first 11 games, including a run of 6 consecutive wins. Quite a remarkable turnaround, despite falling short of an unthinkable play-off spot in the final month. In a season of many negatives, a huge positive was the consistent performances of summer signing Kieffer Moore. The Welshman scored an impressive 20 goals in his first season with the club, and will no doubt kick on next season as the talent is undoubtedly there if Cardiff can build around him. A big problem for Cardiff was their home form. City won just 8 of their 23 home games which is simply not good enough for a side aiming for promotion. This must be addressed by McCarthy next season and maybe with the fans back, Cardiff's home form will improve. Despite falling short this season, Cardiff have the building blocks (and manager) to mount a serious push for promotion in 2020/21.
