Football Season Review

№20: Huddersfield Town

There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Huddersfield coming into the 2020/21 season. Over the summer the appointment of Carlos Corberan, from Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa's backroom staff, left many scratching their heads. A rookie manager taking over a side low on confidence and experience meant the aim coming into the season was always going to be survival. The fact Corberan secured safety (at least for another year) will go down as a huge positive for the Spaniard in the hope the side can continue to grow and expand under his leadership. Huddersfield started well and exceeded expectations in Coberan's expansive 4-3-3 formation. That was until the injuries started to pile up and hit a peak of 13 injuries during the season. The amount of injuries certainly had an impact on the side, with the likes of Hogg, Koroma, Mbenza and others missing extensive periods. The biggest negative was the defence. Huddersfield conceded a whopping 71 goals, the worst in the Championship. Question marks exist heading into next season over Corberan's ability to turn around their defensive fortunes. Jonathan Hogg consistently performed and led the way. The captain was a rock in the middle of the park and comfortably earned player of the season for Huddersfield. Investment is needed and new faces required, but with Corberan's expansive and exciting brand of football, there will be optimism around the camp heading into next season.
