Football Season Review

№16: Coventry City

Survival was the aim for Coventry in their first season back in the Championship and it was achieved with two games to spare. It was touch and go going into the start of April but a run of four wins from five made sure of safety. Main striker Matt Godden missing two months with a niggling foot injury did not help their cause. He was still struggling when he came back in March and is currently sidelined again with the problem. The January loan signing of Leicester’s Matty James was crucial. He gave some much needed stability to central midfield. Of their summer acquisitions, playmaker Gustavo Hamer was very good early on before fading towards the end of the campaign. On-loan Brighton defender Leo Ostigard improved as the season went on and became a first choice pick to play in the favoured back three. Attacking midfielder Callum O’Hare was an unsung hero and an ever-present providing energy and creativity. Going into next season, much will depend on their summer recruitment. James, Ostigard and first-choice left wing-back Sam McCallum are all due to return to their parent clubs while several important squad members are out of contract. They have an experienced manager in Mark Robins who has proved himself astute in the transfer market.
