Football Season Review

№7: Reading

A bizarre season for Reading and one that will overall be an immense disappointment. The Royals had suffered financial issues last summer, meaning they reduced their squad size and did not make many additions. They also strangely replaced manager Mark Bowen with little-known Veljko Paunovic. The Serbian has overall done an amazing job but it could have been so much better. A stunning start to the campaign had Reading top of the Championship by seven points at one stage. Lucas Joao weighed in with 22 goals and Yakou Meite also looked good when he was not injured. The unsung hero, and ultimately player of the season, was Josh Laurent who performed in the centre of the park. Youngsters Michael Olise and Ovie Ejaria continued to impress. But there is a lingering concern that Reading's off-field problems could continue into next season with Paunovic unable to confirm he will be at the club next season. The squad was too small overall this time around to force a bid for the top six and they probably need more signings, if they have the money to do so.

Player of the Season: Josh Laurent
