A side that were never in danger of going down but still struggled sporadically were Mainz. They were always capable of beating the best on their day, but their days were pretty few and far between. Tuchel’s side could be a force on their own patch depending on the opposition. Mainz’s tactic of starting strongly in an attempt to overrun the opposition at times backfired and they often conceded crucial goals early on by way of rival counterattacks and late on due to fatigue. The trouble was that rival sides ultimately found the tactic all too predictable. Tuchel may have to work on that one. The arrival of Zidan from Dortmund has worked out well for Mainz, with the striker bagging seven goals in 12 games. He was referred to as the goal-a-game man as he initially found the net in every game. With Zidan providing more fireworks up front, they could improve in the coming season with the likes Wetklo in goal, Noveski at the back and Polanski in midfield, forming the background of a useful team.
