The one side that didn’t have what it takes in the top flight was Kaiserslautern. That became clear long before the concluding phase of the season. With just four victories in 34 games and 24 goals scored, the Red Devils had no chance of surviving. Lautern didn’t have the worst defence in the league, but things just wouldn’t click into place up front. Goalkeeper Trapp was a revelation at times, and he had to be too. Despite the great experience of the likes of former Stuttgart player Tiffert in midfield, there were too many deficiencies throughout the side. The Red Devils all but proved everybody wrong on the last day when almost winning in Hanover – a venue where no other Bundesliga side had won all season. Alas, it wasn’t to be as they ended up on the receiving end, just as they had done for most of the season.
