Football Season Review

№13: Red Bull New York

Another season of disappointment for New York Red Bulls who did manage to finish in the top six of the Eastern Conference but it was well below their expectations of challenging for the top spot and a strong run in the playoffs where they were dumped out in the first round. Chris Armas had kept his job despite a poor campaign in 2019 but, despite a positive start to the current season, winning two of their opening three games, the Red Bulls' form quickly unraveled as they went on a dismal run of just one win and five defeats from their next seven games, culminating in Armas' sacking and Bradley Carnell being appointed on an interim basis. New York did confirm Gerhard Struber as the permanent replacement for Armas but he did not take over until the playoffs while Carnell did a solid job of stabilizing New York's form and ensuring a sixth placed finish. There were no standout performers for New York though things were not helped by constant chopping and changing of the lineup with Kyle Duncan the only player making more than 20 starts for the club. Struber's first game in charge proved to be the last one for New York this season as they lost out to Columbus Crew in the playoffs and the Austrian coach has a big rebuilding job on his hands if New York are to bounce back from a couple of disappointing campaigns next season.
