Football Season Review

№23: Scunthorpe United

Scunthorpe made the play-offs last season, only to be beaten in the semifinals by eventual winners Rotherham, and were hoping for promotion this time around. They entered the campaign seemingly well equipped to battle for another play-off place, but it soon became apparent that something was not right, as the Iron were shipping goals for fun, especially at home, and their manager Nick Daws was sacked only three games into the season. Daws's replacement was former Bradford manager Stuart McCall. The Iron kept struggling under him, but he had the excuse of having to deal with a lengthy list of injuries. The Iron did manage to improve for a while following a busy January transfer window, that saw McCall bring in as many as seven new players, but their form once again took a dip come February. Scunthorpe seldom show too much patience for their managers and it was hardly a surprise when they opted to part ways with McCall, with assistant manager Andy Dawson being put in temporary charge until the end of the season. However, he failed to turn their fortunes around. The Iron were able to take their relegation battle into the final round, but their relegation was confirmed with a 3:2 defeat at Plymouth, and they would have been relegated even had they won. The Iron therefore have a summer of big decisions ahead of them, as they need to find a new manager and equip themselves for a battle to return to the third tier.
