Another mid table finish for St. Pauli after a season which promised so much. Markus Kauczinski guided the side into the promotion picture, but they faded away which corresponded with the dismissal of Kauczinski. Jos Luhukay came in, but did little to change the side's fortunes.
St. Pauli built their early success in the season on their settled defence which was focused around Marvin Knoll. At the winter break, they were 3rd with Kauczinski getting the best out of his side.
However, compared to the top teams they struggled for goals and they soon dried up. Alexander Meier joined in January, but after an excellent start the results started to turn.
Surprising defeats to Darmstadt and Erzgebirge Aue and Sandhausen was the catalyst for their declined as they started to leak goals and their confidence fell away.
Luhukay was brought in, but the Dutch manager failed to stop their slide down the table. The new manager won only once in his six games as he seemed to experiment with his starting line-up.
In terms of next season, they need to back Luhukay who has experience of getting out the division. Any hopes of promotion hinges on signing a proven goal scorer. They have shown they are solid defensively, but they need to score more goals.
