Sandhausen really pushed their luck and, only thanks to excellent end to the campaign, they managed to stay just outside the bottom 3 and survive another year.
Another turbulent summer and serious change in personnel left coach Kocak to try and figure out his best squad, but 6 defeats and just 1 win in the opening 9 rounds saw the manager being sacked come mid-October.
Uwe Koschinat was appointed in charge for the rest of the season, but the fortunes hardly changed until the end of 2018 with Sandhausen winning just once in Koschinat’s first 10 rounds in charge.
The team had to deal with long-term absentees of many important players and this impacted the results too, with run of 1 draw and 3 defeats in February seeing Sandhausen even collapse into last place at the beginning of March.
This was when Wooten finally woke up and it was his constant goals late in the season that brought 7 wins and 2 draws in the last 10 rounds, which turned out to be just about enough for the survival.
Sandhausen continue to have the smallest budget in Bundesliga 2 and despite their long presence in this division the team can’t continue defying the odds simply on pure stubbornness. Only if new sponsors are found this summer notable strengthening of the modest squad could happen for next season.
