Magdeburg return to Liga 3 after only one season in the second tier after a long hard season which resulted in automatic relegation. The side struggled to adjust in their first ever season in the 2. Bundesliga with a lack of quality in the squad preventing them from staying up.
The champions of the third tier struggled to adjust to life in the second tier and only won game before Christmas. Their form peaked after the winter break with away wins at Ingolstadt, Arminia Bielefeld and Hamburg which were the highlights of their season.
A main weakness was their lack of goals as they accumulated the lowest in the league. In plenty of games over the season, they created plenty of opportunities, but were unable to take them with a lack of composure in front of goal.
At the other end of the pitch they also shipped plenty of goals. Jens Härtel, who was sacked, and his successor Michael Oenning kept switching formations which included back threes, fours and fives.
This season in the second tier is good experience for the club and one they can grow from. The emergence of Felix Lohkemper was one shining light, but Nurnberg have already signed the forward.
The club requires a large reshaping over the summer with a number of players destined to leave. Oenning needs to build a squad to complete in the third division and it is key they keep hold of Christian Beck who topped their goals and assists.
