Union had a historic season that in the end saw them beating Stuttgart on the away-goal rule in the play-offs and getting promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history.
After being very close to top 3 finish in the last 2 years Union started the campaign with a seventeen-game unbeaten run, which showed everyone that they mean business this season. However, 10 of those 17 games ended in draws and this didn’t allow Union to pull away from the pack.
The first defeat of the season came in the final game of 2018, with Union suffering 4 more losses after the winter break. However, the goals of Andersson and the second best home record in the division were just about enough to see the Irons claiming third spot in the end. In fact Union missed direct promotion only on goal difference.
This didn’t matter as the play-offs were a success.
Many players shone during the campaign, but none more than holding midfielder Schmiedebach, who was extremely helpful in defence, but also very important for the forward actions with his smart ball distribution.
Naturally Union enter uncharted waters now and signings players with top flight experience is a must if the Irons are to survive in their first ever Bundesliga campaign.
