Football Season Review

№12: Dynamo Dresden

Despite changing 3 managers and continuing to have serious financial problems Dynamo managed to survive. Lack of money and tensions off the pitch saw coach Neuhaus resigning after just 2 rounds with Dynamo losing 3 consecutive games since his shocking departure. Walpurgis was appointed in charge at the start of September, but with the summer transfer window already over he was practically stuck with the squad he inherited. Still run of 4 wins and 3 draws in the first 8 rounds he took charge of saw Dynamo even enter the top half of the table. Striker Kone played really well under Walpurgis and he scored lots of goals before the winter break. Unfortunately for Walpurgis his reign ended after round 23 when he was sacked. This happened due to the fact that 2019 started with single point collected from first 5 games and this saw Dynamo drop in the relegation zone. Ex-player Fiel was appointed in charge for the rest of the season and under him Dynamo did enough to survive. Crucial were probably the 3:1 away win vs. Erzgebirge from round 27 and the 3:0 home win vs. Koln in round 30. On top of the lack of money for reinforcements Dynamo missed at least 2-3 injured regulars in most games, which made the versatility of Nikolaou very important. Solid in his natural role as holding midfielder the Greek player also started many games in defence where he did well no matter if playing in back 3 or back 4 as every new coach kept changing the formation. The financial health of the club needs close monitoring in coming months as it will be crucial in determining the team’s fate next season.
