Football Season Review

№21: Barnsley

Barnsley secured a quite miraculous final day survival just as it looked like they would be relegated. The Tykes were four points adrift with an inferior goal difference and only two games left. But they somehow secured safety including a last-gasp winner to triumph 2-1 at Brentford on the final day. They had been in the bottom three for the vast majority of the season having won promotion to the Championship last term. Daniel Stendel paid for the poor start to the campaign with his job and Gerhard Struber took over in October. Struber slowly rebuilt the club adopting a 3-4-3 system. There were not too many standout players though this season. Alex Mowatt was again named player of the season while Cauley Woodrow only impressed in patches, netting 15 times but failing to score after the restart. Barnsley need plenty of new signings in the summer to avoid another relegation battle. But Struber has assembled a side full of heart and desire which counts for a lot. As a footnote, Barnsley could still be retrospectively relegated if an appeal by Wigan is successful into their points deduction. That would be incredibly cruel but it is unlikely.

Player of the Season: Alex Mowatt
