Football Season Review

№24: Hull City

Hull were relegated to League One after finishing bottom of the Championship. The reasons are fairly obvious. Statistically they won only once since New Year's Day and in January sold key men Jarrod Bowen, who scored 17 goals, and Kamil Grosicki. It sums up just how important those two players were for Hull. The Tigers had appeared to be a comfortable mid-table side under new boss Grant McCann in the first half of the season. Bowen and Grosicki's sales are not the only reasons for Hull's demise. They also suffered with disruptions behind the scenes with the decision to release four players including captain Eric Lichaj and vice captain Jackson Irvine just before the resumption also proving to be crucial. The rest of the squad really lacked any kind of quality. There were no goals in the attack and the defence looked shaky with even the likes of Reece Burke and Jordy De Wijs, previously important players, disappointing and dropped for the remaining games. Things came to a head with an 8-0 loss at Wigan three games from the end. But even such humiliation could not turn things around. It will be tough work to get Hull back to the Championship now with the whole squad seemingly needing refreshed.
