Football Season Review

№5: St Johnstone

A campaign that began in fairly disappointing fashion became historic by the end. The campaign started slowly for the Perth club, with only narrow wins over Kilmarnock and St Mirren the bright points among difficult fixtures and a slew of defeats, until they found themselves close to a relegation battle. New manager Davidson initially struggled to stamp his identity on the squad with an inconsistent starting XI. He was sometimes reluctant to give certain players game time, with Melamed suffering from a lack of minutes, then contributing well when given a chance. Defence was strong throughout the campaign. With Clarke offering a solid base, Kerr was superb and Rooney excelled at right wing back. Two long unbeaten spells either side of the New Year saw St Johnstone pull to safety, before a late away point at Hamilton sealed a top 6 spot. But it was in Cup competitions that the Saints really shone. A strong League Cup campaign saw them knock out 4 other top flight sides. Then in the Scottish Cup, dramatic victory over Rangers, with an extra time attack involving keeper Clark, set up a run to the final and victory over Hibs. The double cup win was an astonishing achievement for a club of St Johnstone’s size, especially considering their extensive use of youth players and low budget squad. With a solid core of young players and plenty of confidence, St Johnstone can expect another good campaign next season.
