Football Season Review

№4: Aberdeen

An ultimately disappointing campaign for the Dons, defined by failure up front. A fourth placed finish, 7 points behind first place, was a big let down for all involved. Pre-season was strong, with routine European wins over Runavik and Viking building confidence. An early COVID breach from a number of players saw 3 games postponed. But the early season was the strongest part of the campaign. Aberdeen lost on opening day to Rangers, before suffering only a single defeat league against Motherwell, before another defeat to Rangers in late November. Defence was strong here, with Consindine a key member of the back line. With the turn of the year, Aberdeen lost confidence in front of goal. Cosgrove and Main seemed sluggish, failing to lead the line. The midfield was often error prone, and Lewis was relied upon to keep things solid at the back. A full revamp of the forward line late in the season failed to reinvigorate the team. Big name loan signings Florian Kamberi and Fraser Hornby were a major disappointment, failing to score a league goal in 21 combined appearances. Losing Hedges to injury was a huge blow, and saw Aberdeen slow and predictable out wide. Long-serving boss McKinnes left after a long spell without a goal. New coach Glass lacks a track-record of success but slightly improved the side. With a slew of players leaving the club, it’s likely there will be big changes at Aberdeen next season. Success or failure could depend on forward recruitment.
