Football Season Review

№3: Hibernian

An excellent overall season for Hibs and first full campaign in charge for Jack Ross. The Edinburgh club earned the coveted “best of the rest” title, finishing in a strong 3rd place, enjoying some decent cup campaigns along the way. After winning their first three fixtures, Hibs kept up a solid run of form. Relying mainly on technical play and counter attacks, they were solid through the middle and enjoyed the benefits of an excellent partnership from Doidge and Nisbet. Goalkeeper Marciano was consistently excellent and offered a solid base from the back, while McGinn and Hanlon were a solid defensive partnership. Young full back Doidge excelled on the left of defence. Hibs were strong away from home, setting a club record for away victories with 11 throughout the campaign. The club managed to get through the transfer window with minimal disruption, despite turning down large offers and fielding a transfer request from Nisbet. Hibs were less than impressive in the Cup campaigns, despite reaching the League Cup semi-final and Scottish Cup Final. They reached both of these stages without a single win over top flight opposition, only progressing past Motherwell on penalties. On both big occasions, Hibs collapsed against St Johnstone, offering little resistance and failing to offer enough creativity to break down a tough defence. Big names are likely to depart in summer, but large transfer fees should see Hibs remain one of the stronger sides for next season.
