Football Season Review

№8: Motherwell

A season of two halves for Motherwell. They failed to build on last season’s impressive 3rd place finish and flirted with relegation. Robinson’s pre-season recruitment was uninspired and he failed to bring in enough strength up front. Goalkeeping was an area of concern. Experienced back up keeper Fox was almost immediately ruled out for the season, while number one Carson fell to a long term injury too. Turnbull’s early departure brought in a large fee but left midfield lacking in creativity. Without a win in the first 6 games of the season, things looked bleak for a toothless Motherwell. A brief upturn in form was the prelude to yet another poor spell. Robinson resigned on New Year’s Eve after eight games without a win. Tactical changes implemented by new manager Alexander were almost immediately successful. Motherwell finished on a high with 5 wins from the last 8 games. Devante Cole was undoubtedly the star of the season. After a short, promising loan spell in 2019, he returned on a permanent basis and helped lead the line. He formed a good partnership with Watt. With a large portion of the squad departing with the close of the season, Alexander’s recruitment will be key. A strong core should see Motherwell push back into the top 6.
