The 2023 champs Columbus Crew had a busy last year. With deep runs in 2 separate international competitions they did well to still finish 2nd in their Conference. The playoffs brought disappointment though - elimination in the first round. Still, Crew reached the MLS Final in 3 of the last 9 years and they were champs in 2020 and 2023. Had the 2nd best scoring record in the entire MLS last year – 72 goals. This was largely thanks to the 28 goals combined scored by striker Cucho and Ramirez. Both were sold only a week before the start of the new season. Columbus now have funds and roster spots to make a move for a big name. However, as currently constructed young Jacen Russell-Rowe is the only natural striker on the roster. This should change very soon. Crew are expected to add at least 2 CFs before long. However, how much time they will need to settle and adapt is something hard to predict. The only new arrival so far this winter is Finnish winger Lappalainen. He should fit well in Nancy’s scheme. The French manager, 3rd year in charge of the Crew, likes to use both flanks a lot so he always looks for speedsters for these areas. Last year Columbus had the 2nd best defence in their Conference and the 4th best overall. They largely kept the back line intact so more solid defending can be expected from the Crew in 2025.

Target

Can be contenders only if they sign new top class goalscorer. Have the funds and roster spot to do so.
