San Jose’s 2024 campaign was one of the worst seasons ever registered by an MLS franchise. The Quakes finished last in the Supporters' Shield standings, grabbing a league-low six wins, losing a record 25 matches and conceding a record 78 goals. Changes needed to be made and the club started by appointing Bruce Arena, who’s taken over as sporting director and head coach. San Jose star player Jeremy Ebobisse departed along with the majority of their midfielders and several squad players. To fill the gaps, the Quakes made the questionable decision to sign as many as five players from fellow strugglers New England Revolution, who finished fourth-bottom in the MLS last season. Yet, they also brought in forwards Cristian Arango and Josef Martínez, both of whom are expected to spearhead their brand-new attack. It remains to be seen whether their midfield arrivals will be an upgrade on those who left. Their greatest strength for the time being lies on Arena’s dugout experience. If there is someone who can turn things around at the Quakes, that person is their five-time MLS Cup champion coach. Meanwhile, their defence was abysmal in 2024 and it’s doubtful whether Dave Romney’s arrival from a Revs team that allowed in 74 goals last term is the solution for a Quakes side that conceded 2.3 goals per match.

Target

Their main objective should be to build a solid and competitive team that could be in the conversation for the play-ins.
