Midtjylland won their fourth Superliga title on the last day of the previous season. The Wolves were certainly helped by luck to lift the trophy. That said they finished the 2023-24 campaign as the team with the most league wins (19 in 32 games) and their aggression got rewarded. On the previous three occasions Midtjylland were defending champions they failed to win the title again the following season. Can the Wolves change that trend now? Triumphing with the title in his first season in charge gives coach Thomasberg confidence. With Midtjylland currently having the largest team in the Superliga (at the time of writing 42 players are registered in the first team) the gaffer is confident his team can handle the challenges of competing in Europe and on the domestic stage at the same time. Only two important players left the team so far this summer. Veteran full-back Henrik Dalsgaard and the main engine of the midfield last term Armin Gigovic. The bright young talent Victor Bak seems ready to take the next step at full-back, so he could become a regular starter going forward. Midtjylland already addressed Gigovic’s departure by signing Denil Castillo from Shakhtar Donetsk and Kristoffer Askildsen from Sampdoria. If anything the team’s options in midfield now look richer. Up front star striker and top goalscorer from last season Gue-sung Cho stays put for now. His main partner from last year Franculino is also still there. However, offers were received for both of them and Midtjylland might consider selling at least one soon. This feeling was strengthened on the eve of the new season when the Wolves paid a large transfer fee to Lens to add to their ranks the Polish striker Adam Buksa. Buksa promises to become a key contributor for his new club going forward. Coach Thomasberg uses mainly the traditional 4-4-2 formation and this is expected to continue into the new season. What makes the Wolves very dangerous in this shape is the emphasis on the overlapping runs down both flanks. The role of the wide players is always important when Midtjylland take to the pitch.
