Football Season Review

№4: Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton and Hove Albion suffered playoff semi-final heartache against bitter rivals, Crystal Palace. The Seagulls finished in fourth place and appeared in pole position to secure at least a place in the Wembley final. Gus Poyet's men however choked in their second leg against Palace, leaving them facing up to the prospect of another season in the Championship in 2013-14. For at least a couple of seasons now, Albion have been widely regarded as one of the most aesthetically pleasing sides in the division, with their unique brand of passing football currying favour with pundits and supporters alike. Poyet appeared to manage to improve his side's home form this term, which proved the main hurdle in their mid table finish in the inaugural year back in the second tier in 2011-12. A fluid midfield and a sturdy back line has been the bedrock of their impressive season. Former Manchester United keeper, Tomasz Kuszczak has been very dependable after dropping down a division, while skipper Gordon Greer has also been imposing at the back. However, midfielder, Liam Bridcutt has been the star of the show, anchoring the midfield and dictating play on numerous occasions. The former Chelsea academy graduate is out of contract this summer and could well be on the move into the top flight if reports are to be believed. In some games Brighton's relaxed, counter-attacking style worked against them - especially against sides who arrived on the south coast happy for a point from the outset. Developing a credible Plan B will give Albion a great shot at a top six finish in 2013-14 and there is a concern over the future management at the club after Poyet was suspended shortly after defeat to Palace.
