Football Season Review

№23: Burton Albion

Burton came so close to claiming a second straight Championship survival against the odds. Down and out for much of the campaign, the Brewers suddenly went on a three-game winning run prior to the last game of the season at Preston. Victory over the Lilywhites would have achieved survival but they lost, throwing caution to the wind while drawing thanks to a late goal elsewhere. Despite the ultimate failure to stay in the division, Burton boss Nigel Clough can be extremely proud of his players' achievements. They never gave up despite being considerably less talented than plenty of their opponents. Their poor Pirelli Stadium record, where they went six months without a home win, proved to be massive in terms of their survival chances. The sale of Jackson Irvine hit them hard and there was not really any player that stood out for Burton this season. Yet they relied on solid hard work and excellent team spirit, something that so nearly helped them pull off the impossible. Although disappointed they went down, Burton will be delighted with their efforts of the last couple of seasons. The club is in a secure position and will fancy their chances of returning to the Championship with a decent campaign next term.
