Football Season Review

Wolves produced a quite remarkable season to ease to a convincing Championship title glory, finishing with 99 points. There can be no doubt that Wolves were easily the best team in the division but their hotly-disputed transfer policy where the work of Jorge Mendes was criticised as giving them an unfair advantage paid off in style. They made several impressive signings not least Ruben Neves who proved to be far and away the best player in the Championship and quite possibly the best player the division has ever seen. Boss Nuno, who took over from Paul Lambert in the summer, also proved his worth. He was untried in English football and along with their transfer policies, his appointment was a big game for Wolves but one that certainly paid off in style. Nuno's policy was to play a settled eleven and that combined with three central defenders, a wing back system and an overall 3-4-3 formation certainly contributed towards their success. Diogo Jota hit an impressive 18 goals throughout the season and was helped by the January return of former player Benik Afobe in scoring the goals that secured promotion. Wolves certainly had luck with injuries with no key men absent for longer than a couple of weeks throughout the campaign. But they were also untroubled at any stage of the season and there was never a point where promotion was in any doubt at all. Wolves will expect not only to compete in the Premier League next season but also to finish in the top half, such was their dominance this term, and potential to make multi-million pound signings over the close season.
