Football Season Review

№2: Cardiff City

Cardiff achieved an unlikely final day promotion as they kept their nerve on the final day to finish above Fulham. The Bluebirds were expected to finish mid-table but wily manager Neil Warnock worked his magic to secure an eighth personal career promotion, against the odds. Cardiff did not really have any major stand-out players this season but they relied on team work and hard work from an entire squad. They also had several spells in the season where they really went on a roll, stringing several victories together. Their top striker Kenneth Zohore managed just nine goals but that did not matter when you had the likes of Callum Pateson, signed as a defender but spent a fair bit of his time as a midfielder, chipping in with an outstanding 10 goals despite missing a fair bit of the campaign through injury. Joe Ralls was again the club's best player as his class in the middle of the park while Sean Morrison was outstanding in defence and was a real threat at set pieces. You sense that Cardiff are going to need to make several signings in the summer if they are to have any chance of surviving. Warnock though is the ideal man to use his resources wisely. It promises to be an interesting summer but the experienced manager will be looking forward to another crack at the Premier League and rejoice at a minor miracle seeing his side reach the top flight.
