With the likes of Bremen, Schalke and Stuttgart finishing down table, the way was clear for some of the more unfashionable sides to come to the fore and take the stage. One of the biggest surprises of the season was without doubt Hannover´s rapid progress from the previous season when they were almost relegated. . Slomka´s side had seriously suffered following the suicide of goalkeeper Robert Enke last season. The slump seemed to go on forever, but it was certainly a different Hannover that finished their campaign in 4th place this time round. Didier Ya Konan was again the team’s top scorer with 14 strikes, but apart from his goals, he was again their most consistent performer in attack. Former top scorer Schlaudraff also came good after several disappointing seasons. Free kick specialist Pinto was likewise a key member of this Hannover side that broke several club records during the latter part of the season. Indeed, only a late surge by Bayern prevented Slomka´s side from finishing in 3rd place and possible Champions League football for the first time in their history. Nevertheless, they will be in the Europa League next season, which even they would have to admit is more appropriate in the circumstances.
