Nobody expected Freiburg to spend so much of the season in the top half of the league. However, that was the case and although they slipped to mid-table in the closing stages, it was all in all a successful campaign for Dutt´s team. They did have their sights on a Europa League slot in the leading group but Mainz and Nuremberg were always just a step ahead in terms of consistency. There is no doubt as to who their top man and top scorer was. Papiss Cisse bagged 22 goals and was only surpassed by Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez as top Bundesliga scorer. However, the top striker´s future is unclear and uncertain. Indeed, there aren’t many players at Freiburg that are guaranteed to be there next season. Above all, it looks as if Omer Toprak will be following team coach Dutt to Leverkusen. Neither is goalkeeper Pouplin certain to be around next season. There are also others who are either moving on, retiring, or still to reach agreement on an extension to their contracts.
