Football Season Review

№13: Aston Villa

This will have to go down as a majorly disappointing season for Aston Villa who continued their bleak campaign last term in the Premier League. Roberto Di Matteo really splashed the cash in the summer on big name signings including Ross McCormack and Pierluigi Gollini, both of whom were big flops. Di Matteo paid for a desperate start to the season with his job and it was left to Steve Bruce to sort out the mess. In fairness to Bruce, Villa improved in the second half of the season but the damage was already done. Villa continued to spend big in January with James Bree, Conor Hourihane, Scott Hogan and Neil Taylor among the signings. Villa were good at home but abysmal away. Bruce will have more money to spend in the summer but he has indicated it will be used on quality rather than quantity. Villa need a unified approach and a far more consistent campaign this term than they have recently if they are to threaten the play-offs. The one major plus this term was the performances of Jonathan Kodjia, who appeared to be the one new signing who delivered. Kodjia's 20 goals were a major plus and there is pressure on him to deliver in the next campaign.
