Football Season Review

№6: Fulham

Fulham ultimately missed out on promotion after they lost to Reading in the second leg of the play-off semi-finals. But that can not detract from an excellent campaign where Slavisa Jokanovic enhanced his growing reputation in the English game. The Cottagers were excellent in the second half of the campaign, finding a run of form that were always likely to make them feared in the play-offs. However they were outfoxed tactically by Jaap Stam and Reading and must play again in the Championship. One would argue they were not ready for promotion though despite the exciting team they have assembled. Tom Cairney and Stefan Johansen were particularly impressive in midfield while Sone Aluko and Floyd Ayite added strength going forward. Chris Martin's saga, where he asked to return to parent club Derby and was refused, did not help matters and he now seems certain to go back to Pride Park. Another positive aspect for Fulham was the rise of Ryan Sessegnon who played a large number of games for 16-year-old. Whether he stays or goes over the summer could play a big part on whether Fulham challenge again next season. This season could be seen as a stepping stone, certainly their defence was far stronger, but there is bound to be work needed in the transfer market over the summer.
