Football Season Review

№4: Sheffield Wednesday

For a second consecutive season, Sheffield Wednesday were beaten in the play-offs, this time losing to Huddersfield at the semi-final stage. After losing to Hull in the final last year, this time they lost in the semis after a gruelling two-legged affair with Huddersfield. Wednesday's late season run of wins had earned them some confidence but the rest of the season was somewhat disappointing although they did just enough to keep them amongst the division's front runners. Carlos Carvalhal has proved to be one of the most highly sought after managers but he has committed his future to Hillsborough. His campaign cannot be without criticism with investment in a host of strikers including Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall in January supplementing Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher, while the defence were left unimproved. Carvalhal's challenge now will be to get the best out of all departments in the side. Forestieri was somewhat disappointing in a season where he threatened to leave. The form though of Keiren Westwood impressed once again with the Irish stopper rightly earning the player of the year award to ensure he remains one of the most impressive goalkeepers in the Championship.
