Football Season Review

№5: Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield produced a miraculous showing to win promotion to the Premier League against the odds. The Terriers were predicted to finish mid-table at best but under the leadership of David Wagner achieved the impossible, beating Reading on penalties in the play-off final despite finishing fifth in the table. Wagner produced a more European style of play and the loan signing of midfielder Aaron Mooy was most crucial. Wagner replaced the entire defence at the start of the season and they were very attacking in their approach. Wagner was also keen to chop and change his side in a bid to freshen things up. His apparent sacrifice of the remaining couple of games nearly got him into trouble with the authorities but ultimately it proved the right one as they were fresh for the play-offs. Huddersfield won promotion with a negative goal difference which demonstrates just how unlikely the triumph was. But Huddersfield know they will need to make mass signings in the summer if they are to have any chance of survival. That presents Wagner with a big dilemma as he will not want to rip up his side of heroes that achieved such an incredible triumph.
